Volunteers

Volunteering for the CA Higher Education Sustainability Conference is a great way to learn how the conference works and get a behind the scenes view of a low waste, sustainable event.

To acknowledge the contribution of our volunteers, we are giving volunteers access to the event for only $15 for a two day rate and $10 for a one-day rate.

Volunteer Tasks:

We encourage volunteers to share with us their preferences for volunteer assignment, however we reserve the right to assign volunteers to the tasks that we need the most help with at the time. As conditions on site change, we will not change your shift assignment, but we may change your task.

Potential tasks:

Session Volunteers
The vast majority of the volunteers for the conference are session volunteers. The role of a session volunteer is to check in with speakers to ensure that they are ready to go for their talk, ask the speakers to sign appropriate forms, ask participants to fill out evaluation forms, ensure the session stays on time. Session volunteers typically get to see the full presentation that they are volunteering in.

We will not be able to promise volunteers that they will be assigned to a particular track or set of sessions.

Exhibit Show Support

At all times we will have two volunteers assigned to the exhibit show to check in with the sales representatives to see if they need anything, check to see if there are any concerns, questions, or feedback. We often have graduating seniors who volunteer for the show to increase face time with the companies.

Recycling

We will have volunteers hang out near the recycling clusters at coffee breaks and help educate participants about what materials go in what bins.

Caught Green Handed

This volunteer task is for the more outgoing of our volunteers. If you are a particularly shy person, we won’t ask you to do this. The caught green-handed program is our way of reaching out to participants to teach them about recycling and sustainable practices while motivating participants to help us to move towards zero waste. These volunteers will hand out drawing tickets to participants that are taking sustainable actions (bringing their own mug, biking to the event, etc.)

Misc. Errands

There is always an assortment of tasks that come up onsite that volunteers will be asked to help with. These range from running out to Staples to get extra office supplies, moving chairs and supplies, hanging extra signs around campus, etc.

Volunteer Requirements:

Volunteers who want to attend the full conference must sign up for at least two volunteer shifts.

Volunteers who only want to attend one day of the conference may select one volunteer shift and a one day pass for the same day which will give them access to events that day outside of their volunteer shift.

Volunteer registration is free but does not include any discount on housing. Please apply for a scholarship if you need assistance with the housing costs.

Volunteer registration does not include the cost of field trips and/or pre and post conference workshops that show an additional fee unless you are assigned to be a volunteer at that particular event. Scholarships are also available for some of these events.

How to become a volunteer:

You can sign up to be a volunteer when you register. You will need to choose two shifts that you can work (see below) when registering. You can change these shifts later as long as other shifts are still available.
